Everglades Rat Snakes
Glades County, Florida is home to a beautiful local variant of the yellow rat snake, known by breeders as the Everglades rat snake. The standard wild type is a rich, deep orange color with horizontal stripes. Happily, a wild amelanistic female was collected, and became gravid after almost a dozen years in captivity. This female became the founder, along with a wild-collected male, of a line of gorgeous locality rat snakes with glowing orange coloration.

The original amelanistic wild-collected female.

F1 captive bred parents, produced from the amel wild female and a wild male from the same locality.

My F2 50% het male, showing great color as a two year old.

F2 amel female. This snake is the most curious and personable in my entire collection.
About This Project
The locality Glades Co amelanistic project is the work of Chris Montross of Darkhorse Herpetoculture, to whom I am indebted for my pair of animals as well as the photos of the founder animals. My visual amel female is an F2 produced by Chris in 2022. My 2023 male is 50% het amel. I’m hoping for offspring from this pair in 2026. Both of them have spectacular color and are very popular with visitors to my snake room. I am very excited to be a part of this project.
